Tonali ‘felt guilt’ at ban and took Newcastle pay cut

Sandro Tonali ‘felt guilt’ at his betting ban and offered to take a pay cut at Newcastle United, confirmed manager Eddie Howe.

The Italy international received a 10-month global football ban after he was found to have placed numerous bets during his time at Milan, including on his own team.

He started treatment for gambling addiction and confessed to having also placed 40-50 bets following the transfer to Newcastle last summer.

However, the English FA decided to only impose a suspended two-month ban, so he is still set to return at the end of August.

“It was the right decision, I think, that the FA arrived at – that his ban is not extended,” said Newcastle manager Howe.

The Magpies confirmed that Tonali had taken a voluntary pay cut during the 10-month ban, but is still able to train with his club teammates.

“It was something he wanted to do, he felt the guilt… to show the club in good faith that he was sorry,” added Howe.

“He was determined to put it behind him and try to learn from it.”

Tonali ‘needed help’

While Juventus midfielder Nicolò Fagioli came forward to the authorities in Italy to confess his gambling addiction and ask for help, Tonali was reported first and only then admitted to placing bets.

“He had issues and needed help,” continued Howe.

“I see a small fraction of his life, time on the training ground. He has been a good professional and trained very well. I am sure he has had some difficult times, but he has conducted himself in a positive way.”

Because of the ban, Tonali will also be forced to miss the EURO 2024 tournament with Italy this summer.
