Flyers sign Ivan Fedotov to two-year, $6.5 million extension

Fedotov joined the Flyers in late March and made his NHL debut on April 1 against the New York Islanders. He originally signed with Philadelphia ahead of the 2022-23 season, but was detained in Russia for attempting to evade mandatory military service.

His deal was moved over for the 2023-24 season, with the belief that he’d be ready to serve as backup this year. Instead, he signed a two-year deal with CSKA Moscow of the KHL. He had a 21-22-1 record with a .914 SV%, including a 1-4-0 record in the playoffs.

Taken by the Flyers in the seventh round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, he was one of the top goaltenders in both the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and the 2021-22 KHL season.

With the Carter Hart situation unclear and his playing future in doubt, the Flyers wanted to have the spot secure going into the 2024-25 regular season.

After what started as a promising season, the Flyers’ season ended in disappointment, just missing out on the playoffs. They closed with a 38-33-11 record and 87 points, sixth in the Metropolitan Division. They spent most of the regular season in the No. 3 spot, but a string of losses and a late-season resurgence from the New York Islanders and Washington Capitals pushed Philadelphia out of the postseason.
