Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid becomes fourth player in NHL history to record 100 assists in a season
Perry Nelson-USA TODAY Sports

Edmonton Oilers’ captain Connor McDavid made history on Monday night, recording his 100th assist of the season against the San Jose Sharks and becoming just the fourth player in NHL history to reach the 100-assist mark in a single season.

McDavid reached the mark with five minutes to go in the second period, feeding a pass to Zach Hyman on a two-on-one for his 54th goal of the season. At the end of the second period, the Oilers are up 9-1.

The only players to reach the 100-assist mark in NHL history are Bobby Orr in 1970-71, Mario Lemieux in 1988-89 and Wayne Gretzky, who did it 11 times through his 20-year career. The last time a player hit the mark was in 1990-91 when Gretzky did it with the Los Angeles Kings.

Scoring a goal earlier in the night, McDavid now has 32 goals and 100 assists for 132 points, third in the NHL in scoring. Now in his ninth NHL season, McDavid has 982 points (335 goals and 647 assists) in 644 career games.

His teammate Leon Draisaitl, who has two assists against the Sharks, now has 41 goals and 63 assists for 106 points on the season. On top of his 54th goal, Hyman had an assist on Monday and now has 77 points.

The Oilers are 48-25-6 with 102 points, second in the Pacific Division. With the Kings at 97 points and Vegas Golden Knights at 96 points, the Oilers will likely play one of the two teams.
