Three QB options for Browns following Deshaun Watson's season-ending injury

On Wednesday, news broke that Cleveland Browns QB Deshaun Watson will miss the remainder of the season with a shoulder injury. For the short term at least, Cleveland will start rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson at QB. However, Browns general manager Andrew Berry said the team "will add a quarterback at some point in the near future."

Here are three options for Cleveland:

Matt Ryan | CBS Sports

Ryan is a TV analyst for CBS Sports but never officially retired from the NFL. His contract allows him to leave the booth for an opportunity to play again.

As Colts starter in 2022, he had a 14 TD passes but 13 interceptions, one of the chief reasons the team dumped the 38-year-old former Falcons star. He did, however, have a 67% completion percentage, slightly higher than his career mark.

Playing for a playoff contender such as Cleveland, which has the NFL's best defense statistically, may be enough incentive for the 2016 NFL MVP to return to the league. In Super Bowl LI, Ryan and the Falcons blew a 28-3 lead and lost to the Patriots in overtime. Perhaps he could get back to another Super Bowl with the Browns.

Nick Foles | Out of the NFL

Could Foles work his magic again?

The 34-year-old took over for an injured Carson Wentz in 2018 and guided the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl LII victory over the Patriots. Foles was named Super Bowl MVP, but he never returned to that level again.

Following the magical season in Philadelphia, Foles bounced from the Jaguars (2019) to the Bears (2020-21) to the Colts (2022).  The Browns are far more talented than the last three teams Foles played with in the NFL.

Foles apparently has time on his hands. "I'm not doing anything drastic right now," he told the "Up & Adams" podcast during the summer.

Colt McCoy | Out of the NFL

McCoy, a third-round pick by Cleveland in 2010, was a reliable backup for 13 years in the NFL. He last played for the Cardinals from 2021-22, passing for 1,520 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. However, his stint with the Browns may be the best of his career, which is why Browns fans may welcome a reunion.

The 37-year-old passed for 4,388 yards, 21 touchdowns and 20 interceptions for the Browns from 2010-2012. Cleveland may stick with Thompson-Robinson, who will start for the team in Week 11 against the Steelers. If he struggles, however, the Browns might consider turning to a veteran to lead a team in win-now mode.
