Steelers’ New CB Donte Jackson Sends An Enthusiastic Message To Steeler Nation
Jeremy Reper-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers sent shockwaves through the NFL community when they traded away their star wide receiver, Diontae Johnson, along with a seventh-round pick, to the Carolina Panthers. In the surprising move, the Steelers acquired Donte Jackson and a sixth-round draft pick in return.

Despite Johnson's talent and potential, the Steelers seemed to have calculated a strategic maneuver to strengthen other areas of their team. They also have been rumored to have been fed up with Johnson’s attitude and effort during the 2023 season. This trade marked a pivotal moment in the team's roster management, signaling their commitment to adapt and evolve in pursuit of success on the field.

In a conversation with members of the media after his trade to the team, the 28-year-old Jackson shared an inspiring message. He expressed a deep-seated belief that he was destined to be a Steeler, resonating with the spirit and ethos of the franchise.

"Coach [Mike] Tomlin, he was on me a lot coming out of college, and a lot when I was getting ready to sign my second contract.”

Jackson recounted how Mike Tomlin had consistently shown interest in his talent. Tomlin was actually present at his Pro Day held at LSU in 2018, where Jackson showcased his athletic prowess to NFL scouts and coaches.

"I signed a second contract with the Panthers and the Steelers were right there. This past trade deadline, they were right there. And now they're right there again. So, I just feel like it's meant to be. I can't even express the amount of respect and gratitude I have for this organization for not only taking the chance on me, but making me a guy that they focus on getting, that they really showed they wanted for years and years now. I'm finally getting to be here.”

Having spent all six years of his NFL career with the Panthers, Jackson witnessed their struggles to secure victories and establish themselves as a force in the league. In stark contrast, the Steelers, under the guidance of Coach Tomlin for 17 seasons, have consistently avoided losing seasons and maintained a competitive edge.

While the Steelers may not be considered Super Bowl contenders, Jackson's enthusiasm about joining the team is palpable. He’s in a much better situation in Pittsburgh.

"I feel like it happened at the time it was supposed to happen. I've been playing my best ball. I'm just happy to get out there with this great defense and shock the league. I just can't wait."

Jackson expressed his enthusiasm for playing alongside the talented safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and highlighted the extensive film study he's undertaken on the emerging Steelers cornerback, Joey Porter Jr.

He effusively praised Porter's exceptional talent, emphasizing his eagerness to share the field with both Porter and Fitzpatrick. Steelers fans eagerly anticipate witnessing their new defensive back integrate into an already formidable defense, eager to see the impact Jackson will bring to the team.

Steelers Get Worse Trading For Donte Jackson?

Jackson, a solid player coveted by the Steelers for some time, differs from Johnson in his position's talent level, albeit with respect. The decision to trade Johnson stemmed from concerns about his leadership role within the locker room, particularly his impact on the development of fellow star wideout George Pickens. With Johnson's desire to leave evident and a trade looming, the Steelers acted, prioritizing the team's dynamics over individual prowess.

While the initial return on the trade may not seem remarkable, the Steelers addressed a positional need by acquiring Jackson, whom they highly regard. Now, Steelers fans await eagerly to see how the team fills the void left by Johnson's departure, anticipating the strategic moves of Omar Khan in bolstering the wide receiver position. Despite not maximizing the return, the Steelers aim to maintain competitiveness by enhancing their wide receiver talent pool.

The upcoming days or weeks hold immense interest for Steelers fans as they observe Khan's maneuvers to fortify the wide receiver corps. While the trade may not have yielded the best immediate returns, the Steelers remain focused on reinforcing their roster for continued success on the field. They also maintain their steadfast commitment to moving on from wide receivers who don't want to be here.
