Seahawks GM may have unintentionally started Giants quarterback controversy

The New York Giants might have the beginnings of a quarterback controversy on their hands, and if they do, they might have the general manager of the Seattle Seahawks to thank for it.

During an appearance on Seattle radio Thursday afternoon, Seahawks general manager John Schneider said he wanted to re-sign backup quarterback Drew Lock before trading for Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell. The reason he did not re-sign Lock, who ended up signing a one-year deal with the Giants?

In Schneider's words, it is because the Giants sold Lock on an opportunity to start, and that Lock is viewing it as a situation similar to what Baker Mayfield had with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the 2023 season.

That would be a pretty significant development because the Giants already have a quarterback in $160 million man Daniel Jones.

Jones is coming back from a torn ACL that ended his 2023 season after six games, but he is expected to be ready for the start of training camp this summer.

Even before his injury, Jones had taken a significant step backward in 2023, throwing just two touchdown passes to only six interceptions while leading the Giants to a 1-5 record.

Jones is five years into his career, and despite the huge salary, he has never really done much to show that he is the franchise quarterback the Giants need to get back to the Super Bowl. Even when he was at his best during the Giants' surprising 2022 playoff run, he was more of a low-risk caretaker for the offense than a difference-maker.

So maybe it should not be a surprise that the Giants want somebody to push him. Still, given the investment in Jones (a No. 6 overall pick and a huge contract extension), it would be a pretty big deal if he was unseated by a career backup in Lock.

Lock has a 9-14 record in his career. He has played for both the Denver Broncos and Seahawks in his career.
