NFL Analyst Doesn’t Hold Back In Take On Bears’ Caleb Williams
Kimberly P. Mitchell / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Chicago Bears selected quarterback Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick of the NFL Draft last week, and Williams could be stepping into a gold mine.

Typically, when a quarterback gets taken first overall, he is joining a terrible team that just won two or three games the year prior. That isn’t the case with the Bears, who acquired the pick via trade with the Carolina Panthers last offseason and went 7-10 in 2023.

NFL analyst Trey Wingo loves the fit of Williams in Chicago and told Chase Daniel of The 33rd Team that Williams is “walking into a perfect situation.”

Wingo raves about the Bears’ weapons on offense and adds that the team also has a solid defense. He went on to use the example of Patrick Mahomes, saying that while Mahomes would have been great anywhere, it certainly helped to join a team that already had Andy Reid as head coach and pass-catchers like Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill for support.

He adds that if Justin Fields would have had the same type of supporting cast when he was drafted by the Bears in 2021, he would still be in Chicago.

The Bears certainly have an enviable crop of weapons, as they added Keenan Allen and rookie Rome Odunze to a receiving corps that already included DJ Moore. They also have a pair of impressive tight ends in Cole Kmet and Gerald Everett, not to mention D’Andre Swift at running back.

Of course, Williams still needs to make the throws, and he needs to be mentally prepared for the rigors of professional football, but Wingo is right in stating that the circumstances should make the transition much smoother for the USC product.

Williams is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he threw for 3,633 yards, 30 touchdowns and five interceptions while completing 68.6 percent of his passes. He also punched in 11 rushing scores.

We’ll see if Caleb Williams can potentially lead a rising Chicago squad to the playoffs in 2024.
