Giants owner 'supports' drafting QB at pick No. 6

The Giants currently hold the No. 6 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and could go several different ways with several holes to fill. However, owner John Mara gave his team the green light to go quarterback in round one if it so chooses.

"If they fall in love with a quarterback and believe that it's worth pick No. 6 — or moving up — I certainly would support that," Mara said via ESPN.com.

It may come as a surprise after New York signed QB Daniel Jones, the No. 6 overall pick in 2019, to a four-year, $160 million contract last offseason.

At the time, however, many believed the Giants were overpaying Jones even after he was coming off the best season of his career. 

In 2022, he threw for 3,205 yards, 15 touchdowns and just five interceptions, rushed for 708 yards and seven touchdowns and led his team to a postseason win. 

Jones then had an injury-riddled 2023 season, which ended with him tearing his ACL in Week 8. He is currently rehabbing his injury and is set to be cleared for action later this offseason, but that has opened the door for New York to add to the room.

The 2024 NFL Draft is rich with quarterback talent, with some believing we could see up to six quarterbacks taken in the first round. If the Giants don't want to lose out on adding one of the top prospects, using pick No. 6 on the position makes sense.

The top three names in USC's Caleb Williams, LSU's Jayden Daniels and UNC's Drake Maye will likely be gone, but the likes of Michigan's J.J. McCarthy, Oregon's Bo Nix and Washington's Michael Penix Jr. could be there for the taking.

New York has not been shy in doing its homework on what Mara says is the "most talented group [of quarterbacks] to come out in years." However, Mara did add that the team is far from an answer.

"They've gone to some of the pro day, we've had some of those guys in," Mara added. "I don't think they're even close to making a final determination yet as to which way we're going to go on that. Those discussions will happen over the next few weeks."
