Buccaneers' Byron Leftwich: 'You're not beating anybody in this league scoring three points'

Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich offered an honest assessment of his portion of the squad coming off Sunday's 21-3 loss at the Carolina Panthers that dropped the Bucs to 3-4 on the season.

"People want to see points on the board. People want to see us do what we’ve done since we’ve been here," Leftwich explained during Tuesday's press conference, per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "You’re not beating anybody in this league scoring three points, right? Let’s just be honest — you’re not beating a soul, not a team in this league scoring three points. So, we know we have to be better as an offense as a whole."

ESPN stats show the Buccaneers have the NFL's worst rushing attack that's averaging a paltry 64.4 yards on the ground per game and 3.0 yards per attempt. Heading into Week 8, only four teams are averaging fewer points per game than Tampa Bay (17.7).

"When you’re scoring three points, and you are who we are, it’s collectively [a problem]," Leftwich continued. "It’s everywhere across the board. We’ve got to coach it better. We’ve got to play it better. We’ve got to have awareness in situational football — all those things that matter that we’ve been so good at in the past, we’ve got to get back to what we’ve done in the past."

Before the Carolina game that became Tampa Bay's fourth loss in five contests, Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles somewhat defiantly insisted he wouldn't ask former Tampa Bay coach and current senior advisor Bruce Arians to help fix an offense that isn't firing on all cylinders. One wonders if Bowles could have second thoughts about that if the Bucs fall to the 4-3 Baltimore Ravens at home on Thursday night.
